The Cambridge Academy
Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it. (Prov. 22:6)
These commandments which I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them upon your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up (Deut 6:7-8).

Why teach life skills at schools:
Most parents have not been obedient to the commands given them by God. Not having met the obligations with regard to their responsible religious education of their children, they have put their children at risk of being eternally separated from God.

Having noted that many of the Cambridge students were not afforded the opportunity of worship, seldom if ever attended fellowship at Church and had little if any knowledge of the Word of God, our school now had the awesome task of ensuring that the syllabus included religious instruction in the form of Life Skills. This would ensure that every student passing through Cambridge Academy would have been confronted with the Truth. Having placed their children into the care of Cambridge Academy, many parents have provided their children with an opportunity to enjoy a relationship with the True Living God and as obedient children . . . not to conform to the evil desires (they) had when (they) lived in ignorance.

Are our objectives being achieved?
When the Life Skills course was first introduced, some students were rebellious while others were disinterested. Few were eager to study yet another subject and some simply refused to learn for tests and exams, finding no significance in the subject. One or two even received an ungraded result on their report.

After a term of hard work on the part of Rev. Shaw, changes in attitude were noted. Ungraded results suddenly became A-symbols and lives changed. Students who previously had been negative poor achievers and uninvolved in sport or cultural aspects, were now taking a keen interest in school activities.

Life Skills has become not only an integral part of our school syllabus but an integral part of many of our students as well.

Letters from the Cambridge students

Chanique Collet-Serret
Life Orientation was introduced at Cambridge in the beginning of the year. At first, I wasn't sure what to expect, but after one period of the Telos course introduction, I knew it would become a life-changing experience. Rev. Shaw along with the Telos course, has truly made me a stronger Christian. I know now that a religion means nothing without a close relationship with God. I have also learnt that keeping the commandments is in fact impossible without the Holy Spirit. Receiving the Holy Spirit gives one purpose and direction. This course has enabled me to receive Christ into my life and to live for him - this in itself has been fulfilling. Telos and Rev Shaw changed my life and I owe him my whole eternity - quite literally!

The newly introduced Telos Life Skills course has created among us a much more positive attitude as well as a deeper insight into our relationship God. We have a better understanding and joy as a result of this course led by Rev Shaw, who has touched many hearts throughout the school. I am truly grateful to a be a part of this course as it has put many unclear thoughts into perspective. We are eager and excited to learn and listen each week. Thanks must go to Rev Shaw as well as to Mr Callison for this, as many would say, life-changing experience.

I waltzed into the Telos Life course in early 2006 with Rev Shaw, thinking it would be just another 'life skills' period. Sooner than later, I discovered the harsh realities of life which the course has taught us. The books definitely do not 'sugar coat' their words or 'window dress' their concepts. Oh no, we get the full story for which I truly respect Rev Shaw. So often these day ministries have had to compromise the word of God to 'attract' people to the kingdom of God, but the Telos course has done the exact opposite. It has reminded me of how insignificant we really are, and just how needy we are of our glorious heavenly Father. I have definitely seen a change in my life since taking up the course, and I have discovered a new meaning to the word 'forgiveness'. I recommend the TLC to everyone and anyone with a thirst for the truth.

We often ask ourselves this very important question: What is life's purpose?
This multi-faceted question that seemed too complex for any human to answer, has been answered in the form of five simple books - the 'Telos Life Course'. Our purpose is solely to live for God. Not only do we have to be obedient but we have to open our minds and hearts in order to make this life-changing course a success. We as students, easily influenced by the world and worldly temptations, have to learn the importance and significance of continued repentance, ready obedience and the truthful life that God so yearns for us to lead. We are taught to be disciples of God, but before we can set our course for this very important life journey, we are made aware of life's stumbling blocks and how to avoid them. Christianity is a revelation, a special bond, a relationship that we share with our God that should be treasured for all eternity. Glory be to our Father in heaven!
